The sculpture was commissioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution in the mid 1900s as a tribute to a well-known Indiana governor and senator. Oliver Perry Morton (1823-1877) was responsible for sending supplies to Indiana soldiers on the Civil War battlefields. His skill in slashing red tape made Indiana troops among the best furnished during the war. Morton was also a cofounder of the Republican Party.
