    Remarks:
The sculpture is a memorial to Edward L. Scarritt, Class of 1884. Scarritt received his master's degree from DePauw in 1887 and became a lawyer. He died at the age of 31. The memorial, which cost $1,000, was erected by his brother, Winthrop E. Scarrit, Class of 1882. The memorial has been vandalized over the years, including frequent colorization, and has been the object of publicity stunts and student pranks. For related information see the 1985 DePauw Yearbook, pg. 269. IAS files contain excerpts from The DePauw Alumnus 16, no. 6 (April 1952): cover, and inside cover pg.; and The DePauw Alumnus 19, no. 3 (Dec. 1954): cover, and inside cover pg.
