Relief panels are on each of the remaining sides. On the left panel is an anchor. A military medal appears on the rear panel. On the right panel, a horse's head, a horseshoe and crossed sabers are depicted. The lower part of the base is capped by a crested cornice. Remarks:
The sculpture was erected by Silas Baldwin, Sr., in honor of those who fought and those who died in the Civil War. A bronze relief bust of Lieutenant Frank Baldwin appears on the front of the upper base. Frank Baldwin died in 1862 at the age of 18 years in the Battle at Stone River. The sculpture was originally located on Old Lincoln Highway (in Elkhart), now the corner of Tyler and Main Streets. In August 1928, the sculpture was moved to its current site at the entrance of Rice Cemetery. Total cost of the memorial was $3,000, with $2,000 provided by Silas Baldwin, Sr. IAS files contain correspondence regarding the relocation of the sculpture.
