The markers commemorate Abraham Lincoln, James A. Hemenway, and William Fortune. Abraham Lincoln once lived on a farm about seventeen miles from Boonville, and reportedly went there often to hear court trials and borrow books. James A. Hemenway (1860-1923) served as a Congressman from Indiana from 1893 to 1905, and Senator from 1905 to 1909. William Fortune, born in 1863 in Boonville, was an honored citizen of Boonville. The markers were erected under the auspices of the Warrick Historical Society. The Hemenway and Fortune markers cost $2,000, funded through public subscription. The commemorative inscriptions for the Hemenway and Fortune markers were written by Thomas Littlepage.
