Description:
A gravestone sculpture depicting World War I soldier Michael F. Wallner, standing with his head slightly bowed and a helmet held to his chest with his proper left hand. His rifle, butt downward, is held in his proper right hand. A medal appears on his jacket pocket on his proper left side. A small tree stump is behind his proper left foot. The sculpture is mounted on a tall square base.

Remarks:
This sculpture marks the grave of World War I soldier Michael F. Wallner (1893-1940). Wallner was wounded by shell fire in 1918 and remained bedridden until he died on June 3, 1940. IAS files contain an excerpt from Indiana Preservationist 3 (May/June 1993): pg. 10-11; and a related article from the Times-Mail, May 29, 1993, pg. C1.
