Owner:
Clark County Historical Society, Howard Steamboat Museum, 1101 East Market Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47120
Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Howard, Edmund, 1101 East Market Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana
Remarks:
The fountain itself dates from at least the late 1800s, when the Howard Steamboat Museum was a Victorian mansion owned by shipbuilder Edmund Howard. When the fountain underwent restoration in the mid-1970s, the figure of Rebecca was added as a replacement for an original "Lady in the fountain" removed during World War II and lost. The original figure had an upraised proper right arm; but the replacement figure was modeled after the artist's wife Frances, who was left handed, and so the replacement figure has an upraised proper left arm.
The new "Lady" was a gift of the three Howard sisters: Frances Howard Kohlhepp, Laura Jean Howard, and Esther Ailsa Howard Kraus. The replacement Lady was named "Rebecca" after the many Rebeccas in the Howard family. The Terrace Garden Club of Jeffersonville oversaw the restoration of the fountain, which was rededicated in 1975.
