The sculpture was originally commissioned in 1921 in plaster and was entitled "American Doughboy Bringing Home the Bacon". In 1932, money was raised for a permanent memorial sculpture. The bronze cast was made with certain changes in appearance from the original and was dedicated in 1932. SOS! survey lists title as "The Spirit of the American Doughboy"; Rupp and inscription on sculpture give title as "American Doughboy Bringing Home Victory".
