Description:
Full-length cast pewter figure of a firefighter in full uniform. In his proper left arm he carries a small child, protecting it in the shelter of his coat. His proper right arm hangs down, hand clenched to hold a (missing) lantern. The child's proper left arm and head rest on the fireman's chest. The child wears a gown and is barefoot. The sculpture stands atop a tall limestone pedestal with relief carvings on all four sides. On the front of the pedestal is a relief of a hand pump fire wagon. On the back is a relief of a bucket resting on a log topped by a pair of ladders. On the proper right side is a relief of crossed nozzles and hoses. On the proper left side is a relief of a fireman's hat.

Remarks:
The sculpture, which had been badly vandalized, was restored in 1989 by Bill Brummitt. The sculpture was conceived by Capt. William Merker, Chief of the Fire Department, to honor the Volunteer Firemen of the community and was funded through the Veteran Firemen's Association. IAS files contain copy of related article from Daily Ledger (New Albany, IN), Aug. 30, 1902.
