Dimensions:  Sculpture: approx. 6 x 2 x 2 ft.; Base: approx. 9 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 ft. Inscription:  (At rear of base:) Vernia & Son (On front of base:) 1825-1865/IN MEMORY/OF/VOLUNTEER FIREMEN CO'S/NO 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5/& H & L CO, NO. 1/ERECTED 1902 (On all four sides of the cap of the monument:) F (Inscribed on the bucket:) H of L unsigned Founder's mark appears. Description:  Full-length cast pewter figure of a firefighter in full uniform. In his proper left arm he carries a small child, protecting it in the shelter of his coat. His proper right arm hangs down, hand clenched to hold a (missing) lantern. The child's proper left arm and head rest on the fireman's chest. The child wears a gown and is barefoot. The sculpture stands atop a tall limestone pedestal with relief carvings on all four sides. On the front of the pedestal is a relief of a hand pump fire wagon. On the back is a relief of a bucket resting on a log topped by a pair of ladders. On the proper right side is a relief of crossed nozzles and hoses. On the proper left side is a relief of a fireman's hat. The sculpture was conceived by Capt. William Merker, Chief of the Fire Department, to honor the Volunteer Firemen of the community and was funded through the Veteran Firemen's Association.
