    Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Truck, Fenton B., 14 East 53rd Street, New York, New York 1920-1928.
    Remarks:
William the Silent (1533-1584) was Count of Nassau, Prince of Orange and national hero of the Netherlands. The sculpture is a duplicate of the one made by Lodewyk Royer in 1848 and installed in the Het Plain Square in the Hague. The duplicate was made by Toon Dupuis who used the original plaster cast. The sculpture was purchased in the Netherlands by Dr. Fenton B. Turck who had a direct ancestor that had served as physician to William of Orange. The sculpture remained in Dr. Turck's possession from 1920-1928. In 1928, he anonymously transferred the sculpture to the Holland Society and arranged, with the help of Leonor F. Loree (Rutgers trustee), to donate the sculpture to Rutgers. IAS files contain an article from the Rutgers Alumni Monthly (Feb. 1968), pg. 6-7; and a statement from the Rutgers News Service.
