    Remarks:
The figure is a replica of a sculpture installed by Pope Pius IX in the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The sculpture was purchased largely from bequests from Mother Angela Gillespie's Holy Cross sisters, students and alumnae of Saint Mary's Academie. The sculpture stood for several years on the Main Building's front porch roof until the dome was completed. Rev. Sorin fought the board of trustees for some time and finally got his wish that the dome and pedestal be gilded. W. J. Edbrooke was the building's architect. The sculpture was regilded by Conrad Schmitt Studios sometime during or before 1991. IAS files contain an article from Historic Preservation 43 (Oct. 1991), pg. 24-25 and an excerpt from Thomas J. Schlereth's "A Dome of Learning, the University of Notre Dame's Main Building, 1991.
