Description:
An abstract sculpture consisting of two foot square piers of varying height placed throughout a plaza. Two of the piers rise as posts and carry a lintel to form a portal. The sides of the posts are polished smooth while the tops are left rough, as are the two ends of the lintel. The sculpture is positioned over supports of a parking garage below.

Remarks:
In April 1985 the State Building Commission allocated $50,000 for the sculpture project. The artist accepted the commission in June of 1986. The Wisconsin Arts Board oversaw the project. The title "Wisconsiana," was the name given to the first daughter of the Pecks, the first family to settle in what became Madison. Their log cabin is said to have stood where General Executive Facilities II and III now stand. According to the artist, the archway is "a kind of pushing forward of the front door of the state. It's a symbolic act of welcome." Anderson Bros. and Johnson supplied the Wausau, Wisconsin red granite for the sculpture. Madison Block and Stone, under the direction of Bill Rattunde, installed the sculpture. Nearby plaque reads: WISCONSIANA/LLOYD HAMROL/c 1987/WITH FUNDS PROVIDED BY/THE WISCONSIN STATE BUILDING COMMISSION/THROUGH THE WISCONSIN ARTS BOARD.
