Description:
A bust of Commodore Crane, rests on a sphere mounted on a highly decorated shaft. Crane wears an early 19th century commodore's uniform, with epaulets. The sphere beneath the bust has four high-relief carvings of dolphins, one at each corner. Carved text plaques on three sides of the shaft highlight Crane and his career. On the front of the shaft, there is a limestone eagle with wings spread, resting on a mast, with carved American flag. The west side of the shaft is decorated with a life ring, anchor, and crossed cannons, above a ribbon. The shaft's plinth features intertwined oak leaves and acorns (symbol of the Navy). The rectangular base has star shell projectiles on each corner.

Remarks:
The statue commemorates the Naval Center's namesake Commodore William Crane (1784-1846), early American naval hero and first chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography.
