Remarks:
The image of the bird was taken from a lithograph by Georges Braque. Duncan Phillips, founder of the Phillips Collection, saw the bird on a poster for an exhibition held in Paris at the Louvre in 1958. He contacted Georges Braque and asked for permission to use the bird design for a sculpture to celebrate the opening of the new wing of the Phillips Collection. Braque suggested Pierre Bourdelle as the artist to translate the design into sculpture.
