    Remarks:
IAS files contain an excerpt from Jannelle Warren-Findley's Aug. 1, 1985 report for the National Park Service entitled, "A Guide to Selected Statues, Monuments and Memorials," National Capital Parks - Central, National Park Service, Washington, D.C. (RFQ 3-4-1919) which includes a brief maintenance history, a list of bibliographic sources, and notes to additional information found in National Park Service files. IAS files also contain an unidentified clipping which includes photographs of the installation. SOS! survey indicated base medium is travertine and National Park Service report indicated gray granite. A permanent base, possibly designed by the stone contractors, Roubin and Janeiro, was not installed until after the dedication ceremony. The statue had arrived from Spain with a boat-shaped base which was not accepted by the National Capitol Planning Commission. The Spanish Embassy agreed to a temporary base made of railroad ties for the dedication ceremony. The sculpture was a gift of Juan Carlos of Spain.
