Remarks:
The naval memorial was designed by Conklin Rossant from a concept by Adm. William Thompson and his staff. Adm. Thompson spent five years discussing the figure of the Lone Sailor with the sculptor, Stanley Bleifeld. Bleifeld inconspicuously included Thompson's name on the duffel bag; however, Thompson notes that the figure is "the symbol of every one who ever served, seamen and admirals, men and women." Planning for the $15 million memorial was begun in 1978 by the Naval Memorial Foundation. IAS files contain a related article from the Washington Times, May 31, 1991, E1-2 in which Adm. Thompson discusses the plans for the memorial. IAS files also contain a brochure on the memorial and related article from Modern Maturity magazine, Oct./Nov. 1987, which includes photo of the Lone Sailor prior to installation.
