    Description: 
    Bronze compass installed on top of a square base. The compass shows all sixteen standard directional symbols with a fleur-de-lis pointing north. On the front of the base is a round relief of a spoked wheel with a winged hat in the middle.

    Remarks: 
    The milestone was a gift from the Lee Highway Association, and it stands on the meridian of the District of Columbia. It was the starting pot of two transcontinental motor transportation convoys --one over the Lincoln Highway on July 17, 1919, and one over the Bankhead Highway on June 14, 1920. The Inscription on a plaque located to the east side of the milestone reads: The National System of/Interstate and defense Highways/special civil engineering/achievement award/presented by the/American Society of Civil Engineers/1974. Inscription on small plaque embedded in sidewalk three inches in front of milestone is unreadable.
