These panels are installed between the portals of the north and south driveway entrances. Next to the south portals, from left to right the panels depict: the Census Bureau, an unfurled scroll; the Coast and Geodetic Survey, a ship's compass; the Bureau of Mines, a hammer with a pick across it and a lantern on top; the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, a caduceus. Next to the north portals, from left to right the panels depict: the Bureau of Navigation, a ship; the Bureau of Aeronautics, an airplane; the Bureau of Steamboat Inspection, an anchor with a chain wrapped around it and a lifesaver on top; the Patent Office, an eagle perched on a shield. The name of the bureau appears across the bottom of each relief.

    Remarks:
Four of the bureaus are no longer under the jurisdiction of the Department of Commerce and are now under either the Department of the Interior or the Department of Transportation. According to the Gurney publication, these panels were designed by York and Sawyer, modeled by Ricci and Zari, and carved by the Edward Ardolino Company. Goode publication attributes these reliefs to James Earle Fraser. Image in Goode publication is of only one of the eight reliefs, the Coast & Geodetic Survey. Another eight relief panels depicting the eight bureaus of the Dept. of Commerce appear on the west facade of the building.
