Description:
Full-length figure of Christopher Columbus. He holds a sword in his proper left hand and an oar in his proper right hand. He stands on a tall base on which his ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria are incised. Behind him stands a coiled spool of marine rope.

Remarks:
Commissioned by the Ybor City Rotary Club for $5,000. The idea was conceived in 1951 during the Club's observance of the 459th anniversary of the discovery of America. The design was inspired by a picture of Columbus on a rum bottle. IAS files include a news clipping from an unknown source, and excerpts from "The Treasure City-Tampa" by Gary R. Mormino and Tony Pizzo (Tulsa, OK: Continental Heritage Press, 1983, pg. 177) and the 15th Annual Italian-American International Golf Tournament Program, 1992. IAS files also contain text of nearby commemorative plaque.
