Description:
Nude male figure with arms outstretched, supporting a large pair of wings. He stands in a somewhat forward position on a rough surfaced semi-globe. His knees are bent slightly. On his head is an aviator's helmet of World War I vintage. Around his waist is a belt holding a knife on his proper left side. The proper right side of the base features a relief depicting a World War I biplane. A relief on the proper left side of the base is so badly worn that the object depicted is unrecognizable.

Remarks:
In the ground in front of the monument is stone plaque with the following incised inscription: In Memory of/James Rogers/McConnell/University of Virginia, 1910/A Member of/The Seven Society/(A large numeral 7 with the symbol of infinite above, the letter A at left, and the Greek letter omega at right). IAS files contain copy of article from University of Virginia Alumni Bulletin 12 (1919) which includes information about James Rogers McConnell and the artist's conception of the monument.
