    Description: 
    A full-length portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, with his proper right arm raised above his head in typical speaking pose. He stands on a small rectangular base before a 30-foot granite stele, overlooking an oval terrace. Behind him are four 21-foot granite monoliths, inscribed with his thoughts on Nature, Mankind, Youth, and the State.

    Remarks: 
    Federal funds were approved Sept. 13, 1960, and work begun in July 1963. The statue of Roosevelt cost $139,000; the entire memorial cost $946,450. IAS files contain transcriptions on adjacent steles, and an undated brochure and booklet on the memorial, issued by the National Park Service. Washington D.C.'s Martin Luther King Jr., Public Library has information on the statue in the Washingtoniana section, in clipping file entitled "Roosevelt Island."
