The Ames brothers were major investors in Credit Mobiler of America, the construction company building the transcontinental railroad. The sculpture was designed by Henry Hobson Richards; Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned to create the bas-reliefs. The sculpture was constructed in 1882 near the summit between Laramie and Cheyenne next to railroad tracks. In 1901, the railroad was rerouted three and one half miles south of the monument.
