    Remarks:
The statue commemorates George Foulke McCulloch, financier, businessman, newspaper owner, politician, and philanthropist, who is considered "Muncie's first citizen." He was one of the organizers of the Indiana Union Traction company which provided electric trolley service to Muncie, and he founded the Muncie Star in 1899, and later formed the Star League of newspapers in Indiana. When he died in 1915 this statue was erected with funding provided by public contributions, including pennies donated by thousands of school children.
IAS files contain a copy of the Muncie Evening Press (Muncie, IN), June 10, 1915, discussing plans for the memorial to McCulloch, who donated the land for park between 1892 and 1911. Press article includes engraving of first design submitted by George Dodds and Sons Granite Company, which called for a life-size statue surrounded by an exedra, estimated cost of $15,000. IAS files also contain a copy of the Muncie Star (Muncie, IN), April 14, 1916, discussing award of contract to Leonard Crunelle; article from Muncie Evening Press, Nov. 1, 1917, discussing dedication ceremony; and article from Muncie Star, June 5, 1927, discussing landscaping for the park around the statue. IAS files also contain copy of dedication invitation. In 2000, statue was restored and moved to the McCulloch Park entrance at the corner of Broadway and White River Boulevard. IAS files contain rededication brochure.
