    Description: 
    There are 10 lions placed around the courthouse; all are in a sitting position with full manes flowing back as if windblown. Beneath the lions' bellies, the stone is carved to resemble a pile of rocks. Four of the lions are centered each in front of one of the four entraces. Those in front of the west, north, and east entrances have their tails on the proper left, while the one on the south has his tail on the proper right.

    IAS files contain copies of the Rochester Sentinel (Rochester, IN), Dec. 4, 1896, which gives nicknames for the lions, and IAS files contain the Rochester Sentinel (Rochester, IN), Dec. 11, 1896, and Dilts, Jon, "Magnificent 92," N.p. 1991, pg. 57 discussing the history of the courthouse and the lions. The lions were carved by an unknown German immigrant, on site. The lions were designed by A. W. Rush & Son, architectural firm. The lions were estimated to have cost $1,600.
