(Below Empire State building relief:) THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING HAS BEEN A SYMBOL OF NEW YORK CITY SINCE 1931. BUILT OF INDIANA LIMESTONE, IT SOARS TO A HEIGHT OF 1,454 FEET. (Below Indiana Capitol relief:) A LIMESTONE STRUCTURE OF NEO-(...illegible) DESIGN, COMPLETED IN 1888, THE INDIANA STATE CAPITOL BUILDING FEATURES A DOME RISING TO A HEIGHT OF 234 FEET. (Below National Cathedral relief:) CHARTERED BY ACT OF CONGRESS IN 1893, THE WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL IN OUR NATION'S CAPITAL IS THE SIXTH LARGEST IN THE WORLD. Description:
A half-mile walkway that consists of 1,272 refrigerator-sized blocks of limestone forming a low, irregular canyon that frames an ambling arboretum of dogwood, fir and redbud trees. At various points along the trail, inscribed and sculpted blocks tell the history of limestone from its formation under prehistoric seas to its rise as the building material of choice for great structures from the Gothic cathedral to the Empire State Building. Included are depictions of the Empire State Building, the Indiana State Capitol buiding and the National Cathedral in Washington. A rose window allows glimpses of the river beyond the promenade. The entire promenade is meant as a celebration of of limestone, its history and significance to the state of Indiana.

Remarks:
IAS files contain copies of the Indianapolis Star (Indianapolis, IN), Nov. 9, 1992 and Oct. 24, 1992. This piece won the 1992 American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award for design. The artist's company donated $20,000 for the Rose Window. The White River State Park Development Commission contributed an additional $13,200 for the window. The entire promenade project was estimated at 1.3 million dollars. See IAS files for copy of award program and for additional text of inscriptions on piece.
