Description:
"Large equestrian statue depicts a caped man riding a horse and reading a book. He holds the book in his proper right hand and holds onto the saddle with his proper left hand. His head is bent forward. All of the horse's hooves but the front proper right one touch the ground."

Remarks:
Work was commissioned by Robert A. Booth, prominent Eugene businessman and early Oregon State Highway Commissioner, as a memorial to his father, a Methodist Episcopal minister who died in 1917. Statue was originally placed at the west front of the old Capitol, but was moved to its present location while the new Capitol was being constructed (probably 1936 or 1937). IAS files contain excerpts of National Register of Historic Places Registration Form, also on file at Oregon Arts Commission in Salem.
