Description:
This sculpture is part of a six-piece group (two reliefs and six free-standing figures installed on the South Terrace) that depicts the theme of the U.S. emerging as an independent nation and settling the eastern coast. Rosin sculpted two figures, The Quaker and The Puritan (IAS 88320072), to represent the two major spiritual forces which were a part of the settling of the country. The Quaker is a standing male figure holding a book in his proper right hand and a broad-brimmed hat in his proper left hand. He is dressed in Quaker attire consisting of a knee-length jacket, shirt with a tie at the neck, long buttoned waistcoat, knee britches, stockings, and shoes with large buckles. His hair is worn long. He stands facing to his proper left and with his proper left foot taking a step forward. The sculpture rests on a square base which is installed in a low wall.
