    Description:
This sculpture is part of a six-piece group (two reliefs and six free-standing figures installed on the South Terrace) that depicts the theme of the U.S. emerging as an independent nation and settling the eastern coast. Rosin sculpted two figures, The Quaker (IAS 88320073) and The Puritan, to represent the two major spiritual forces which were a part of the settling of the country. The Puritan is a standing male figure holding a rifle vertically in front of him. He grasps the barrel of the rifle with both hands. He is dressed in Puritan attire consisting of a belted thigh-length jacket with large collar, knee britches, and small boots. A gunpowder horn hangs from his belt on his proper right side. His feet are spread apart slightly and he stares straight ahead. The sculpture rests on a square base which is installed in a low wall.
