This sculpture is part of a six-piece group (two bronze monuments and four stone figures installed on the Central Terrace) that depicts the themes of westward expansion and America welcoming immigrants. The enslaved individual is an unshackled African-American male kneeling and facing down to his proper right. At his sides are his shackles, but his hands are chained. His proper left hand rests in his lap and his proper right hand rests on his right thigh. He has no shirt or shoes and is dressed in only a pair of pants.
