Description:
This sculpture is part of a six-piece group (two bronze monuments and four stone figures installed on the Central Terrace) that depicts the themes of westward expansion and America welcoming immigrants. The ploughman is a nude male figure kneeling down on his proper right knee and reaching over with his proper left hand to sow seeds into the ground. With his proper right hand he holds a sack over his proper right shoulder. He represents the pioneers who came west in search of new land to settle. The sculpture rests on a square base which abuts a stone stairway.
