    Remarks:
The sculpture was erected by the surviving members of the Steven J. Ryan Camp, No. 7, United Spanish War Veterans. The veterans group found their membership decimated by death, and were unable to maintain their building. When the building was sold, members felt it would be inappropriate to divide the proceeds from the sale among the survivors, since so many deceased veterans had contributed to the building. They decided to use the proceeds to erect this monument on the Lawrence Common, also known as Campagnone Common, on July 7, 1941. The monument was moved within the park and was rededicated in 1943. Charles Keck created the lower base plaque, which was cast at the Jno. Williams Foundry.
