Description:
Standing portrait of Dr. Gross dressed in a long coat, bow tie, and a buttoned vest with a watch chain hanging from the right pocket. His bushy hair frames his face and he looks intently out before him as if giving a lecture. He holds a scalpel in his raised proper right hand as he gestures with his raised proper left hand.

Provenance:
Formerly located National Library of Medicine, Washington, District of Columbia 1897-1970.
Remarks:
The cost of the statue was 11,000 dollars and was funded by the American Medical Association, the Jefferson Alumni Association, and the United States Congress. Originally, the sculpture was installed at the National Library of Medicine in Washington, D.C., but when the library was moved, the Alumni Association of Jefferson University acquired the sculpture because Dr. Gross had spent his teaching career at the University. Dr. Gross is the celebrated subject of Thomas Eakins painting entitled "The Gross Clinic."
