Description:
Bronze relief bust of William Worth Belknap in circular setting on upper front of granite base. Belknap wears a dress uniform, his hair is parted on the proper right side, and he has a long, full beard.

Remarks:
William Worth Belknap (1829-1890) was born in Newburgh, New York. He served through the Civil War, becoming Brigadier General in 1864. He became Secretary of War in Grant's cabinet in 1869 and was impeached in 1876. This monument was erected by his friends, including the Crocker Iowa Brigade, 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Army of the Tennessee, and Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Goode's book gives date of monument as 1891; University of Delaware's Index of American Sculpture, as well as the Save Outdoor Sculpture survey, give date as 1897.
