    Remarks: 
    The bridge where the lions are located is one of the first pre-cast concrete bridges in this country and the lions were created by the same process and installed shortly after the bridge was finished in 1907. The Goode publication cited above depicts one of the sleeping lions.
    In 1964, the lions were restored by local sculptor Renato Lucchetti. In 1994, the lions were removed for anticipated bridge repairs. IAS files contain an article from City Paper (District of Columbia), Mar. 4, 1994, which explains that during bridge repair work the lions would have to be relocated to the Air Rights Tunnel on south bound 395 so that they would not be damaged. Because it was not known if the concrete lions were reinforced with a metal armature, the District of Columbia Department of Public Works was concerned that moving the lions might further damage them. A restoration crew made molds of the lions using wax, rubber cement, and fiberglass cloth which would be used to recast lions should they break up during their move. The lions were recast in a high-strength concrete and the new casts were installed on the bridge in 2002. IAS files contain articles from Northwest Current (Washington, DC), July 7, 1999, pg. 5 and the Washington Post, Feb. 14, 1999, C3, which discusses the 1994 removal of the lions, subsequent restoration work (including the new molds) by Reinaldo & Patricia Ghiglino (of Professional Restoration).
