The memorial consists of a curved granite wall of an exedra adorned with seven bronze relief panels and a curved bench on which a classically-draped female figure is seated. The female figure leans forward slightly with her head bowed, looking down at a wreath of asphodel which she is making. Her hair is pulled back and rolled around her face. Her robe is tied at the waist and she wears sandals. She symbolizes Memory. Behind her on the wall of the exedra are seven relief panels which depict scenes illustrating Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" from "As You Like It." Three steps lead up to the front of the exedra and in the middle of the steps is a large urn resting on a low granite block.

Remarks:
Samuel H. Kauffmann (1829-1906) owned the Washington Evening Star from 1867 until his death. Kauffmann wrote not only the editorials, but also an art column. He owned a significant collection of American and European paintings, and was especially interested in the history of sculpture. IAS files contain an excerpt on William Ordway Partridge by Robert Burns Wilson from the American Section, John Lane Company, 1907, and an unidentified article dated 1928 or 1929 which describe the Kauffmann Memorial and its placement in the history of American sculpture. The Goode publication contains the only detail view of any of the relief panels, the fifth panel, the relief depicting Parenthood.
