    Description: 
    McClellan, dressed in his military uniform of the Union Army, is seated on his horse, his right hand on his hip and his left hand holding the reins. The sculpture rests atop a tall base adorned along the top with eight shield-shaped emblems which note McClellan's battles. On either side of the base is a bronze relief of composed of cannons, flags, swords, and eagles. Garlands of oak and laurel are draped between four eagles that stand on each of the four corners of the base.

    Remarks: 
    McClellan was the commander of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. In 1862 he led his army to victory over Lee's army at Antietam. The memorial was approved by an act of Congress on March 3, 1901. The sculpture was the result of a competition which took place in April and May of 1902. Twenty-eight designs were submitted, and in 1903 a contract was signed with the artist. The sculpture was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1906 before being shipped to the United States for its dedication in May 1907. The sculpture was erected at a cost of $50,000, funded by the Government and by contributions by the Society of the Army of the Potomac,
