Remarks:
These monuments were used as memorials to the congressmen who died in office during 1807 to 1877. "Although several hundred of these monuments were erected, less than eighty bodies were interred under them. The practice of erecting these...monuments was halted in 1877 because of an animated speech by Senator George Hoar of Massachusetts in which he remarked that being buried beneath one of them would add a new terror to death. After that date, Arlington Memorial Cemetery became the national burial ground."
