Description:
Thirty-three keystones, each in the shape of a male head, are installed above the arched windows all around the second story of the building. Each keystone head represents a different ethnic group. The races represented are, from north end of the Entrance Pavillion, continuing south, and round the building to the Northwest Pavilion: Russian Slav, Blond European, Brunette European, Modern Greek, Persian, Circassian, Hindu, Hungarian, Semite (or Jew), Arab (Bedouin), Turk, Modern Egyptian (Hamite), Abyssian, Malay, Polynesian, Australian, Negrito, Zulu, Papuan, Sudan Negro, Akka, Fuegian, Botocudo, Pueblo Indian, Esquimaux, Plains Indian, Samoyede, Korean, Japanese, Ainu, Burmese, Tibetan, and Chinese.

Remarks:
Otis T. Mason, then curator of the Dept. of Ethnology at the Smithsonian, spent six months studying the ethnological collections of the Smithsonian, before creating plaster models for the heads which were then sculpted by Boyd and Ellicott. Smithmeyer and Pelz were the original architects of the building and Casey later followed them as the architect of the building.
Image in the 1974 Goode publication is a detail shot of the Chinese keystone. Images on file in the Inventories are overview shots of several sides of the building, and one detail shot of the Burmese keystone. IAS files contain related article by John J.
