Description:
Nude figure of the satyr, Silenus, leaning against a tree while holding in his arms the infant Bacchus, future god of wine. This is a youthful portrayal of Silenus who is depicted with a strong and lean body, a full beard and moustache, and short curly hair. He leans with his proper left arm resting against a tree. All of the branches have been cut off of the tree trunk. Silenus stands on his proper right foot with his proper left ankle crossed over his right. In his arms he cradles his foster son, Bacchus. The baby reaches up with his proper left hand to touch the face of Silenus who looks down at him.

Remarks:
The original of this sculpture was created by Praxiteles and is located in Paris at the Louvre. The Philadelphia sculpture was cast from the original by an unknown sculptor.
