Description:
A snarling lion crouches over a snake which he has pinned down under his proper right paw. The sculpture rests on a three-tiered oval base.

Remarks:
This piece, documented as cast sometime between 1889 and 1891 and may be the bronze cast that was exhibited at the Universal Exposition in 1889. The letters CH. G. in the inscription may be the initials of the artisan who cast the piece. The cover sheet on the SOS! survey notes that the current custodian of the sculpture is the Fairmount Park Commission and that conservation is handled by the Fairmount Park Art Association. Funding for this sculpture was raised through public subscription begun in 1885.
