Description:
A huge bronze bust of Ludwig van Beethoven rests atop a tall granite base adorned on the front with a bronze female figure holding a lyre. The female is dressed in classical robes and holds the lyre out to her proper left side with both hands.

Remarks:
The monument was a gift of the Beethoven Maennerchor (men's choir) of New York City. The bust is a replica of the original 1884 bust which stands in New York's Central Park. IAS files contain an excerpt from The Arts Commission of San Francisco's "San Francisco Civic Art Collection: A Guided Tour to Publicly Owned Art of the City and County of San Francisco," San Francisco, CA: Arts Commission of San Francisco, 1989, pg. 63; the text of a newspaper article from the San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 7, 1915, pg. 3; and an Arts Commission memo and cataloging card.
