Remarks:
The sculpture, which was executed in Rome in 1857, cost $6,000 and was commissioned by Noah Walker, a merchant and owner of Baltimore's largest dry goods and clothing store, Noah Walker and Company. The sculpture was originally installed in a third floor niche on the facade of the Noah Walker and Company's Washington Building. When the building was sold in the 1890s, after the death of Noah Walker, the Walker family donated the sculpture to the city. The base was donated by Enoch Pratt. The niche in which the sculpture now stands was made by George Mann and Son.
