The sculpture honors Father John J. Fitzpatrick, S. J., a Jesuit Father who served at the University of Scranton beginning in 1965. He served in many capacities, most notably as a residence hall counselor and chaplain of all varsity sports. The University's Fitzpatrick Field was named in his honor. Father Fitzpatrick died in 1987. The sculpture was funded by the Father Fitzpatrick Spirit Fund and dedicated on Wall of Fame Day in 1994. IAS files contain a 1994 article about the sculpture dedication from the University of Scranton student newspaper.
