    Remarks:
Inscription on nearby plaque reads: SPERM WHALE/by/JEROME STEIN/October 25, 1983. IAS files contain a copy of Waterbury American (Waterbury, CT), Oct. 26, 1983. Stein created the work in 1979 and in 1982 was approached with the idea of placing it on the library grounds. The work was dedicated on Oct. 25, 1983, 20 years after the first section of the library was dedicated. The whale is the state animal of Connecticut and the piece celebrates the state's once thriving whaling industry.
