Description:
Seated nymph is lacing her sandal. She wears a flowing robe from the waist down, and her braided hair is in a bun. The sculpture stands on a square base which is covered with ivy.

Provenance:
Formerly located Carolina Art Association, Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401 1917-1941.
Remarks:
Probably acquired by John Izard Middleton, youngest son of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was located at the Middleton Place House from 1820 to 1917. From 1917 to 1941, it was installed in the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston. It was then returned to Middleton Place and became its logo. A self-guided tour booklet included in IAS files from Middleton Place identifies the work as "Wood Nymph," by which it is popularly known. The booklet also gives the execution date as ca. 1810.
