Remarks:
The wall was created by The Art Coalition for P.L.A.Y., a coalition of public education agencies including the Talented Art Program of the Monroe City School System, the Art Department of Northeast Louisiana University, and Masur Museum of Art. The Playground League for All Youth, P.L.A.Y., was the sponsoring agency. Warner, a teacher in the Monroe Schools, was project director.
Ratcliff
, an art professor at Northeast Louisiana University, supervised graduate students Eubanks, Shannon, White and Warner in the carving of the relief casts. Designs for the 38 relief panels were created by students, grades 5-7, of the Talented Art Program in the Monroe schools. Each student interpreted an art masterpiece through a line drawing the exact size of a wall inset. The drawings were then carved into clay reliefs by the four graduate students. The final concrete panels were cast from these carvings, and set into the wall.
Cost of the wall was $14,000. The project was funded with private donations given by individuals, businesses, foundations and service clubs. The wall was named in honor of Century Telephone Enterprises for their support of the All-Children's Park renovation project. IAS files contain copies of numerous related articles from News-Star (Monroe, LA), February - October, 1994; Artsnews (West Monroe, LA), Summer 1994; and LAAE Journal, Spring 1996, pg. 25. IAS files contain copies of related City and State Dedication Proclamations, copies of related correspondence and a copy of the project statement. IAS files contain information sheet with detailed dimensions, titles, artist, student and school names for each relief panel.
