Remarks:
The memorial was carved from a pin oak tree that had been planted on the firehouse grounds in 1915, the last year that horses were used for responding to fires in Lakewood. When it was determined that the tree was dying, the idea for a memorial surfaced and $8,000 was raised by the community for the memorial sculpture. The sculpture is scheduled to be relocated to the new main fire station being built on the corner of Madison Avenue and Warren.
