Description:
Figure of a Civil War soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform consisting of a long coat, a cape buttoned at the top and a cap. The mustached figure holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the gun rests in front of his proper right foot. His proper left foot is forward and bent at the knee. The figure stands atop a multi-tiered base, inscribed with names of the Civil War battle sites; and, on the East side, a cannon and anchor representing the Army and Navy; on the West side, a Coat of Arms of the state of South Dakota; and on the South side, an eagle representing the United States.

Provenance:
Formerly located Main Street & 4th Avenue, Milbank, South Dakota 57252 1904-ca.1917.
Remarks:
This piece originally stood at the corner of Main Street and 4th Avenue on a submerged base of prairie stone. A tin box of GAR records and memorabilia was sealed in the base. The statue was moved ca. 1917 to the Grant County Courthouse. The cost of the piece was 1,200 dollars. Funding was provided by private subscription, the city and county. IAS files contain copies of unidentified newspaper articles and citations from books describing the monument, the unveiling ceremony and the creation of the piece.
Jennings
was assisted in erecting the statue by D. O. Bircher, who also carved the inscriptions.
