Description:  A depiction of Christ in Gethsemane, one of ten scenes or niches within a large manmade cave called the Crystal Shrine Grotto. The sculpture consists of a kneeling figure of Christ positioned in a concrete background which represents the garden at Gethsemane and depicts a landscape view in which there is a village on a hillside, trees, and daisies in the foreground. A large tree sculpted in high relief forms the backdrop for the olive grove. Christ has shoulder-length hair, a beard and long white robes. He kneels facing in towards the background, his face is tilted upwards, and his hands are placed on the rock in front of him. IAS files contain an unpublished paper on Memphis Memorial Park, written around 1992 by Lisa Simpson, a former curator of Dixon Gallery & Gardens, Memphis, TN, which discusses the conception, planning and creation of the Crystal Shrine Grotto. Clovis Hinds, the original owner of Memorial Park Cemetery, commissioned the Grotto and helped with the planning; Dionicio Rodriguez created the Grotto; and Luther Hampton created the figure of Christ. The Crystal Shrine Grotto was opened to the public in 1939, although the sculpture by Hampton wasn't completed until 1972. The sculpture of Christ by Hampton was reported by the Save Outdoor Sculpture survey as being made of plaster, but the article by Lisa Simpson notes that the sculpture of Christ was made of papier mache.
