Located Portland Central Fire Station, 380 Congress Street, Portland, Maine
Provenance:
Originally installed Western Promanade, Portland, Maine 1898-1910.
Formerly located Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 1910-1987.
Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the Portland Firemen's Monument Association. Known as a professional woodcarver, this was one of
Souther
's first commission in granite. The sculpture was originally located on the Western Promenade in Portland, but was moved to Evergreen Cemetery to make room for the Thomas Brackett Reed statue (ME000406). In 1987, it was moved to the rebuilt fire house. Kevin Lee, of Richardson Monument Company, cleaned the piece in Nov. 1987. Sources differ as to whether the monument was first moved in 1902 (the year of Thomas Brackett Reed's death), or 1910 (the year the Thomas Brackett Reed sculpture was installed). IAS files contain articles from the Evening Express (Portland, ME), June 23, 1980, the Portland Press Herald, May 29, 1972 and Downeast Magazine (Maine), Nov. 1984.
