Inscription:  (On base, front right corner:) BUILT BY/HAWKES BROS./PORTLAND ME (On top of base, in raised letters:) P.F.D. (Incised on base, front:) ERECTED BY/CITIZENS OF PORTLAND/IN HONOR OF/THE FIRE DEPARTMENT/1898 Description:  Full-length figure of a fire fighter stands on a decorative base. The figure wears a Victorian fire uniform including long coat and hat. He has a moustache and holds a fire hose in both hands, his proper left hand around the nozzle. The base is square with polished and unpolished stone faces. The top is decorated with scallop shapes. Formerly located Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 1910-1987. Remarks:  The sculpture was commissioned by the Portland Firemen's Monument Association. Known as a professional woodcarver, this was one of Souther's first commission in granite. The sculpture was originally located on the Western Promenade in Portland, but was moved to Evergreen Cemetery to make room for the Thomas Brackett Reed statue (ME000406). In 1987, it was moved to the rebuilt fire house. Kevin Lee, of Richardson Monument Company, cleaned the piece in Nov. 1987. Sources differ as to whether the monument was first moved in 1902 (the year of Thomas Brackett Reed's death), or 1910 (the year the Thomas Brackett Reed sculpture was installed).
