Inscription:  (On front of base:) LONGFELLOW Description:  Full-length figure of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow dressed in a Roman toga, leaning against a Classical-style pillar. He is bearded with mustache and is missing his nose. Both arms bent at elbow, hands missing. Carvings on base include a harp, laurels, and paint brush and a book. F., Remarks:  Commissioned by R. F. (Fish) Jones in 1908 for the Longfellow Gardens near Minnehaha Falls, where he owned and operated the first Minneapolis zoo. In 1934, he presented the land and sculpture to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Longfellow (1807-1882) was an educator and poet whose "Song of Hiawatha" in 1855 took place at Minnehaha Falls. Early photographs show the figure once held a scroll and quill pen, before the hands broke off. IAS files contain information from the files of the Arts Commission.
